Gear listing and a bit of history…

I’d always have an interest in photography. I remember I use to play with the old SLR that my dad and uncle had – left lying in the cupboard in the living room. Dad tried to teach me how to load a film. He also tried to teach me about shutter speed & aperture. He even had one flash. 1/60s, that’s the shutter speed that we need to set it at when using the flash. At that time, I couldn’t really understand what exactly he meant – but I still go around shooting photos. When we grew older, my uncle bought one compact – full auto. Now, I believe it’s a fixed lens and with auto focus. I used it in all my trips – provided I can borrow it from him. Loaded a film and make sure all the exciting group shots were taken during the trips.

Back in those days, at the place where I stayed, you only need to buy one roll of film with 36 exposures (normally it’s ISO 100, until the last 10 years where ISO 200 is more generally available and recommended). When we sent it for developing, we paid RM2 for development fees and another 30 cents per photo. In addition, we get another roll (usually ISO 100) free! That’s the way it goes – we never need to bother about buying films. Sometimes, we also sell the photos to the other people who are in the group shots, at 60 cents per photo – talk about some entrepreneurship.

Back then, I never know the technicalities of shutter speed, aperture, ISO & lens in detail. I only know I want to take photo to capture the moments. Every time I sent the film for developing, I just couldn’t wait to collect them when they are ready. Then again, the exposure for photography back then was very limited. Couple with the high cost associated with the gears and film developing – the interest didn’t grow.

When I started my working life and earning my own income, the digital bug had just bitten the world. Digital camera were first seen and it’s getting cheaper by the day. The breaking point was with the first dSLR from Canon – EOS 300D, was introduced to the market. That’s when the hype for digital photography really began – even around my world. Friends were slowly embracing the digital cameras. I’m seeing more and more people taking photos with digital camera – no films require development. It’s all digital negatives.

My first digital camera was a Canon Powershot A40 compact. A 2nd hand camera I got from Clubsnap.org. It was a good camera. Though a compact, PSAM mode is there. Spend a year’s time with it, before the sensor went kaput. During that time, my brother recommended a friend who was looking for a buyer for his Canon EOS 300D. And I took the plunge.

No looking back from then. It was 9th July 2005 - I just check back the very first photo I took the very same day I bought the camera.
