It’s really a love hate relationship with this episode.

It continued from 1.0 (which was to say, a simple retelling of the story from the original series), but I never expected it to open with such a loud scene destroying Unit 05! Things went on with Asuka bursting onto the stage. It was all good, a wee bit of nostalgia, only to have another and another bigger and better fight scenes! I particularly enjoyed the scenes where slow melodies and songs accompanied those action sequence. To see Shinji catching the falling Angel trusting in his two allies was very touching. Then, a very strong love triangle moment developed that I thought was generally a very good touch.
From then on, the story proceeded differently from the original. To me, it felt like a second chance for all creator out there to believe “if I could have done it this way instead”. I must say, this other story would be as good at this point of the story. In fact, I find the characters development, especially for Rei and Asuka, turned for the better as they became so much more complex earlier in the show as compared to the original series.
Then, came the unknown and novel. Unit 02 going Beast mode, now that’s new. It may be just a gimmick, but heck, it showed a different level of engagement for the Eva themselves. This perhaps would no longer and never be played out as Asuka’s mum protection charm towards the end, but it did make the scale bigger.
It was at this point that I felt very sadden and disappointed. It was the time where you knew the show was going to end in a cliff hanger, but you want to continue it immediately. This was the point where loving it turned hating it. It should not end, I kept screaming to myself, but I knew I wanted the scene to complete as perfectly as all others.
This is definitely a very good show IMO. 9.0/10.0 from me. And yes, do stay for the scenes after the credit! I’ll be there when Evangelion 3.0: Quickening opens!
